Saw it. Loved it.

Not a perfect film, but one I could watch again. It's a typcial Joss-verse with unlikely (but entertaining) glibness, twist-yer-gut ironies, and character DEATH. But what I loved most were the action sequences. There's a rawness to the fighting that takes the tension up about 20 notches. And guess what happens when you combine martial arts with classical ballet? Summer Glau. *happysigh* What a beautiful, beautiful person. I could watch her move all day.

Some reviewers complained about the lack of special effects and the choppy cutting. Didn't bother me a bit. The special effects were just fine, thanks, and the choppiness felt stylistic. Along with bobbing frames and weird angles (I'm sure there's a non-layman's word for this), the choppiness gave the movie an immediacy, a realness that Star Wars sorely lacked.

In fact, it's a lot like Star Wars, (The original three, that is. I've heard rumors of others being made??) and in a good way. It's space opera at its finest, but with a clever script and less discernable morality. Star Wars all grown up.

The sound editing is fantastic.

Go see it. It's worth the ten bucks.

and character DEATH

A great disturbance in the Force...as if a million geeks cried out in disbelief, and were silenced...

Choppiness in combat! Sounds awesome. I'll probably see it with Cynthia when I get back.

I'm like the only martial artist who thinks Hong Kong action sequences have sucked the life out of fight scenes. I mean can you really feel tension, danger, and fear for characters when they are fighting a back and forth battle across rooftops and swallowing spinning side kicks with no effect? Tension is from implied danger and fear for a character you love, not from fancier and fancier moves.

I haven't seen it yet (probably will next weekend), but if the choppiness is anything like the choppiness in the series, it's done intentionally. Whedon even talks about it on the Behind Scenes on the DVD set. Pretty cool all around.

I loved it on the series. Gave it a very *real/immediate* sense of POV even though we were the fly on the wall narrator.

Ah, interesting. I didn't know that. But yes, I had the same feeling...like I was *there* with the characters. Guess this means I'll be watching all those extras. :)

Dude. I think you'll love it.

And yes, I know what you mean about sucking the life out of action sequences. Trust me...you'll worry about these people. *grin*

I loved it, too. After that one big death (which I knew was coming and still audibly gasped anyway)every time someone took a hit I about hyperventilated.

I think I'm going to go buy the series today, because I love those characters so much.
