Writing Epiphany
Oct. 11th, 2004 01:53 pmYes, it has happened. Rae has realized that her writing sucks. Not sucks as in throw-this-manuscript-away-and-find-another-job, just sucks as in take-a-step-back-and-fix-some-things-before-you-hijinx-the-next-chapters.
So, The Unmagicked will have to suffer a brief haitus while I accomplish some things:
1) Fix 2 bad prose habits: Practice by re-writing two short stories and submitting them.
2) Re-write earlier chapters to fix bad pose and reveal some social forces / plot arcs earlier in WIP: Webs, the unmagicked movement, apathy toward encroaching vaimen, two political parties, Corth's slave economy, "Innovation is worth a magician's share of magic"
3) Re-write ch's 4, 5, and 7 to decrease "transition" and heighten "conflict."
4) Decide once and for all whether Khatire stays or gets her own novel. (And change Egyptian-derived names to something infinitely more pronounceable)
This is the first of, I hope, many productive epiphanies. The cool thing is that rather than feeling daunted, I'm completely stoked (can I still say stoked?) that I know exactly what will make my WIP better. Publishable? Who knows and who cares. I'm just going to spend the next couple of months celebrating "better." Woo hoo! *gets groove on* *feels embarrassed*
Butler: Such a lovey kitty lately. Spent the night as my own black and white, twitchy-tailed boa. Took repeated pleasure in finding my trachea with a well-placed paw.
Bugs: Weavels in my flour. GROSS! Time to rethink this non-domestic bliss thing. Maybe I should cook once in a while. Then, I'd at least know when my flour was getting old. Hey, interesting story detail there...

what is it with kitties and tracheas? Mine go right for it every night! "Ugh, kitty I can't breath" then they look all offended when you move them an inch back. hee hee *lurves butler, onion and harry*

Date: 2004-10-11 10:41 pm (UTC)Me now: "Move cat! Sweep of the arm."
I need to go back and revise as well. Plot has morphed from a traditional fantasy type to 'I don't know what is going on or what the character motivations are'. So I'm not going to revise till I get to the end, because I'm sure the stupid story will change several times before I get there.

Date: 2004-10-11 11:53 pm (UTC)Actually, his review of 20 was very nice, thanks to Rae buffing it up before I posted it! :D
But 26 is very raw... just to tick him off, I'm planning on finishing 27 tonight or tomorrow (probably tomorrow) and sending it to him. Oh yes.
