Inspired by a discussion on [livejournal.com profile] aaron_mag 's lj with [livejournal.com profile] jmeadows, [livejournal.com profile] greenlight711, and [livejournal.com profile] everyonesakitty regarding the many false starts of novel writing, I went back to the archives and dusted off some old manuscripts. I didn't find novel start #1 (a space opera when I was 11), but I DID find #2, a fantasy conceived at the ripe age of 13 that made it to 12 hand-written pages. (My current WIP is the very first "novel start" that has exceeded 20 pages)

So, for your amusement (punctuation and spelling preserved):

Excerpt from Rae's Second Novel Start (circa 1986)

...A sharp clanking sound. Metal? A low, steady murmer. Massed voices? A long ways off? Then it clicked. Soldiers! It must be an entire force. But, where were they going? Were they going to attack? To whose side did they belong? The girl made a resolution. She would go, and find out. If it was the right side, she'd be on her way. If it wasn't, she'd wreak havoc. She'd done it before, she could do it again. Maybe they'd have prisoners that she could free, a meal she could ruin, a bonfire she could set out of control, supplies she could burn, or perhaps, some head honcho she could quietly dispose of...
