Cancer

My uncle has rectal cancer, not colon cancer. This is a good thing, as his is the more treatable of the two. The doctor is very optimistic and [livejournal.com profile] mrissa was right; "cancer" does not necessarily equate with "hopeless." In fact, his spirits were so high that he called everyone with the news on his way to the gym for his nightly workout.

The extended family congregated at my uncle's house last night to pray for him. I had to work late and couldn't make it, which is fine with me. I would have been a blubbering idiot. Still, my uncle was much encouraged by the show of support. Believe what you will about prayer and its efficacy, but there's just something beautiful and miraculous about a family that can pray together.

Uncle Wes is one of the healthiest people I know, and it just boggles to think of someone like him getting cancer. But the C-word is the bane of this generation, a silent, sneaky, deadly Randomness. I could be the next victim of her whimsy. Or you.

And what if it IS me? What if I don't have that much time left? Dude(s). I've soooo gotta finish this book.

*writes furiously*
