My greatest obstacle to writing is my own perception of failure. I *know* when I suck. (Which is, frankly, most of the time.) So I write a thing, hate it, rewrite it, hate it a little less, delete it, write it a totally different way, *almost* like it, get frustrated with myself for not capturing what lives in my head... and so on.

So, in honor of the Self-Doubt Monster, a quote of the day:

"Writing is easy. All you do is sit at the typewriter until drops of blood appear on your forehead". --Red Smith

Yeah, Red, we hear ya.

BUT, for this marathon, I hereby vow that the SDM will know stunning defeat. Down with editing! Down with chronology! There will be no blood because there will be no trying. Only words.

Let the suckage flow!!

Let the suckage flow!!

Just wait till the doubt monster starts telling how bad you are at letting the suckage flow.

"Look at that. You just corrected a typo. Man, you suck at sucking. Not a single sentence ending in a preposition. And you call yourself an amateur?"

Dooode. You're supposed to be backing me up here. "You can do it, Rae!" for example. Or, "You're going to be GREAT at sucking!"

Be creative with your encouragement. I'm open to all kinds.

:-P

How about: "You will suck with such greatness and efficiency that future generations of children will learn of your feats in song and poetry."

Better? :-)

I have three quotes taped to my desk that help me keep writing in perspective:

"Nothing is really work unless you would rather be doing something else." James Barrie.

"Congenial labor is the secret to happiness." Arthur Benson.

"Nothing is particularly hard if you divide it into small jobs." Henry Ford.

I wish you the best of luck wanting to write more than anything else, enjoying the work of it, and dividing it into small jobs instead of an unassailable megalith! =)

Can I join the marathon even though I'm not part of OWW? I have something I'm starting to work on even though I'm not talking about as of yet.

dude(s), I want to join, too. Mine's an editing marathon, which may in fact defeat the purpose, but I want to finish editing my novel for good this weekend, like finish enough to give it to someone to read.

*joins even though not invited*

YAYAYAYAYAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what fun!

Good luck with the marathon. I'm off for five days and I plan to spend at least three days of it writing. *hugs*
