The Business of Being Born
Feb. 10th, 2008 01:38 pmBirth is BIG business.
I believe most births could be and should be attended by less expensive and more holistic-oriented nurse midwives. In the U.S., only 11% of births occur under the supervision of a midwife or nurse midwife. In other developed countries, that number is 70%-80%--and with much better outcomes.
I'm usually not much of an activist. But this is one of my hot button issues. It's another way in which we women remain in the dark about our choices. It's another way we are made powerless and afraid of our womanhood. And, like so many feminist issues, it ultimately affects our partners and children too.
I encourage everyone concerned about rising medical costs to check it out.
Even more, I encourage everyone who *doesn't* know about the U.S.'s dismal infant and mother mortality rates to take a very close look.
(Warning: slight birth squick in the trailer.)
The Business of Being Born
I think the full documentary will be available on Netflix within the next couple of months
