For me, step one of overcoming a bad writing habit is always noticing it in other people's work. The last few weeks while reading slush, I choked on rampant overwriting. (It's funny, cuz I never really cared before.) Sure enough, the choking was merely a precursor to realizing I suffered the same malady.

*chokes*

So, tonight, Sunglasses will be deflated and depurpled of its self-importance. Things that are Not A Big Deal will be treated as such. Down with two-paragraph-long openings of highly tactile doors! Down with awkward marriages of gorgeous sentences to plain content! Long Live Economy!!! *roars*

Is this an inflated way of saying Sunglasses will be pulled from the shop and reworked?

Okay, cool. Because it's on the list of Things To Be Gotten To that resides in my wallet. I'm hoping to get to it within a week or so.

Good for you

And that makes total sense. Now I know why people keep telling me to learn by critiquing other people's works. Soooo much easier to notice an annoying habit when it is someone else's annoying habit, er um, something I'd never, er um, do, um...

Isn't it great how that works? I think I learn more from reviewing than from getting reviewed. Both are good, though.

Hrmm, I read the opening scene (about two hours ago) to get a taste before sitting down for a full critting and I liked the depth of the setting. It felt like Neal Steaphenson, thick and rich, but the pacing and plotting kept scampering along.

That's just me...

If you must prune, do it with a gentle hand.

While it would be nice to have a crop of curls about your face, you don't want to go for the bald chicken look.

I like your style.

Lovecraft would be turning in his grave, if her were not, in fact, in a secret military installation in Antarctica.

I liked it as well. Hopefully she doesn't change it too much. The original draft was very good. I remember thinking something along the lines of, "I don't have much to say about this other than it is good..."

And that is coming from an opinionated asshole who has a bloated sense of self-importance and loves to listen to himself talk. So it has to be pretty good in that case.

I don't think I've ever once thought about your work, "Dang, that Rae sures overwrites." As others have said, I like your style.

*giggles* Exactly. It's amazing how objective we can be about the work of others, isn't it? *g*

Hope I don't mind? I didn't even remember. It had been a long time since I last read Sunglasses.

I had even forgotten you were the author of it. I saw the telltale come through and was like, "That name is familiar...but I can't remember what the story was about..."

So I checked OWW and thought, "Oh yeah! I remember this was a good one. I didn't know Rae wrote that..."
